More armed security guards
*Most campuses now have a security guard or armed police man.
But, if a shooter, or shooters, were to enter the building, would one be enough? No. One guard could easily be shot and leave the entire building unprotected. This is why we need to get, not only more than one security guard on each campus, but they must be armed to be able to effectively protect the school.
MENTAL hEALTH PROGRAM
*Firearms will be accessible to potential mass murderers in the U.S. because there are over 310 million firearms in civilian hands that are not going to magically vanish with more gun control laws.
*1 in 4 children and teens has a mental-health issue at some point, but less than 25% get treatment.
*Newman, a dean at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, said those who became killers were usually first misfits, often scrawny and less physically mature than most of the peers with whom they compete for attention.
*There have been government budget cuts in mental health services of about $5 billion in the last three years across the country.
*These cuts have decreased the availability of mental health services at the school and community level both for those suffering mental health problems and for others who have family members who are mentally ill. Adequately funding such services could make a difference in curbing violence.
*CFIX analyzed 14 mass shooting incidents that occurred between 2011 and 2013 and found that only three of the shooters had no history of mental illness.
At least 44 shootings since Newtown
* 64% of the shootings took place at K-12 schools and 36% took place on college or university campuses.
*Of the K-12 school shootings in which the shooter’s age was known, 70% were perpetrated by minors.
*In more than a third of all incidents, at least one person was shot after a schoolyard argument or confrontation escalated and a gun was at hand.

The program would...
*Assist students with already diagnosed mental-health issues, making sure they receive proper therapy, medicine, and accommodations in school
*Identify/diagnose students (with the help of teachers and staff) that are showing signs of having a mental health issue, inform parents, and get them the necessary therapy, medicine, and accommodations.
*Most of all, improve minor issues that can lead to greater ones, such as improving social skills, assisting students in getting involved and finding hobbies, improving grades, connecting them with someone they can talk and confide in, teach them how to create goals and stick to them, and would include workshops on everything from stress management and how to communicate better with parents, to anti-bullying messages.
